Coaching Motivation – sharing with the Greats

It’s been an incredibly motivating weekend at the 2011 Canadian National Endurance Conference, sharing knowledge and listening to presenters on various aspects of training, coaching and race prep.  There are many ways to success, and it helps to hear specifics on how some of the great middle distance champions in our time have reached their pinnacles:  Canada’s Coach Wynn Gmitroski shared his experience coaching Canada’s 800m Champion Gary Reed, Coach James Li shared his training regime for the great Bernard Lagat, Coach Margo Jennings on Maria Mutola.  The list of presenters was fantastic.  I especially enjoyed being able to reconnect with many co-coaches and friends in the athletics world, including my friend Alberto Salazar, who has developed the career of American Recordholder Galen Rupp from the time he was a young soccer player to where he is now with an incredible 26:48 for 10K.  Sharing, talking, laughing and comparing notes.  It’s a privilege to be part of working with young up-and-coming athletes with my local club here in South Surrey – Ocean Athletics…  helping them to become the best they can be,  both on and off the track.
